DR. M. GEORGE AYAD, AN EXCEPTIONAL PERIODONTIST IN BERGEN COUNTY, NJ, SHARES A NEW STUDY HIGHLIGHTING THE LINK BETWEEN GUM HEALTH AND SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATION IN PATIENTS WITH HYPERTENSION

George Ayad, a trusted periodontist in Hackensack, New Jersey is sharing anew research study published in the American Academy of Periodontology's (AAP) scientific journal, the Journal of Periodontology, sheds light on the connection between gum health and systemic inflammation in individuals with hypertension (high blood pressure).
 
In the cross-sectional study, 151 participants with hypertension were divided into groups based on their gum and implant health status. More than 50% of participants had periodontitis (an advanced form of gingivitis) and peri-implantitis (gum disease associated with dental implants). Researchers measured C-reactive protein (CRP) levels to indicate inflammation in participants.
 
Participants with periodontitis alone showed statistically significantly higher CRP levels compared to healthy controls. Additionally, those with both periodontitis and peri-implantitis exhibited even higher CRP levels, indicating heightened systemic inflammation. These associations persisted even after adjusting for age, sex, smoking, and body weight.
The study's implications are clear: peri-implant diseases are significantly associated with systemic inflammation. This underscores the importance of addressing gum and implant health in managing inflammation, particularly for individuals with conditions such as hypertension. The study's findings should motivate further investigation into the nature of this association.
